NXT R EVOLUTION! The best thing going on in WWE right now is NXT! Great wrestlers. Great characters. Great wrestling. And something I really appreciate, it has great but simple storytelling. Nothing embodied all of those things than NXT’s special event, NXT: R-EVOLUTION. That show along with WrestleKingdom 9, got me excited about Pro Wrestling again. It inspired me to start doing NXT sketches every week in place of the Monday Night Draw sketches I do of Raw. This is the beginning of that, a print of pretty much every wrestler involved in NXT: R-Evolution.
The Brood! We’re at the final Monday Night Draw Halloween edition and the final sketch is of Edge, Gangrel, and Christian, The Brood! My favorite stable during The Attitude Era that I feel didn’t get pushed to their full potential. They looked cool and had my favorite entrance, where they would rise from the stage through a ring of fire and had this awesome music. I always liked these guys and wish they had used them more and little better. I always find it interesting that The Brood was the beginning of both Edge and Christian and The Hardy Boyz, who all went on to have great careers.
Been wanting to draw these guys for a long time but never really got a chance to. Pushed my Nightmare Pro Wrestling style on them a lot. For fun and for practice, as I’m going to be starting up the NPW comic again soon. Might even print one of these for myself!
The Wyatt Family! It’s week 4 of Monday Night Draw Halloween sketches and I wanted to draw my favorite from the group of other-worldly wrestling characters. They’re modern and an actual threat…or at least they were for a while until they started losing toward the end of their recent run against top talent. I like their creepiness and their presence. I especially like Luke Harper and really like what he does in the ring. Not that I don’t like Bray Wyatt. I do. I just happen to like Harper a little more.Anyway, a creepy trio with a lot of talent, with a great leader, great presence, and a great look. They seem to be re-debuting soon and I really hope they start becoming a threat again and pick up some significant victories.
Pushed the blacks and shadows a little more in this one. I wanted them to be covered in darkness with only Bray’s lantern as the light source. It was nice to experiment with a different way of inking.
Papa Shango! Probably my earliest memory of any sort of spooky kind of wrestler would have to be Papa Shango with his creepy music and smoking skull, and chanting as he made his way down to the ring. My other memory is of Shango putting a curse on the Ultimate Warrior and Warrior puking up what looked like creamed corn. But enough of that, Papa Shango is definitely one of my favorite spooky supernatural wrestling gimmicks!
I tried to make him look a little more creepy than the other two sketches I did at the beginning of the month. I added more blacks while inking and made the remaining white in the background coming from his skull’s smoke. I made sure to place the smoke in the background where it would emphasize the character and what I wanted people to focus on.
Boogeyman and Mankind! It’s October! This is my favorite month and Halloween is my favorite holiday! So I’m going to be doing something a little different for Monday Night Draw sketches. Every week I’ll post up a sketch of one of my favorite horror/spooky WWE wrestlers! I’m only printing a limited run of 10 art prints per sketch. So pick one up while you can!
I’m kicking off this week with double sketches of the Boogeyman and Mankind. Boogeyman because I wanted to draw a character that was very obviously supposed to be scary, plus I thought it would be fun to draw the worms in his mouth. Mankind because I had always wanted to draw some version of Mick Foley. Early Mankind was my introduction to Mick so there’s a bit of a nostalgic reason to drawing him and Mankind is the creepier of Foley’s wrestling personas.
Trying to keep all of these sketches closer to my Nightmare Pro Wrestling cartooning style. Had a lot of fun with these especially Mankind. Really looking forward to finishing up the rest of the sketches for October!
